Wagner South Dakota Wagner South Dakota is a small city located in the southeastern corner of the US state of South Dakota. It lies on the banks of the Missouri River and is home to nearly 2,000 people. Wagner is a diverse and friendly city with a vibrant community. History Wagner was founded in 1862, and has been in continuous use since that time. The city was planned by German immigrant entrepreneur Dr. A. G. Wagner. Wagner was one of the most prominent towns in the area until the railway was built in 1915. The city experienced its highest population ever in 1920 with 3,015 residents. The population remained at about this level for many years until it began to decline with the arrival of more modern transportation and the post-World War II economic boom.
